Art
The creative arts are a wonderful opportunity to express individuality
and be the sole creator of something beautiful that never before
existed. The act of creating something new, using materials with your
own form of personal expression, can be very therapeutic and
empowering. Our projects have very flexible goals so that even those
with limited experience, or limited abilities, can succeed in creating.
We demonstrate the techniques and guide the group through the learning process. Our individual assistance helps take the fear out of getting started, even if this is their first art project. And if anyone is having trouble seeing or using their hands, we can help them make it.We can also hold an art party at the end of the class, with all of the students’ work on display. The parties are a wonderful way for them and their families to learn new things about each other. All classes are 1 hour long unless noted
otherwise.
Painting on
Acetate – A great way to gain
confidence with painting, and create beautiful pictures suitable for framing. A picture or photograph is drawn or traced on a piece of acetate, then painted with acrylic paints. Guidance will be
provided in mixing colors to achieve the desired results.
Tissue Paper/Mixed Media Painting – Images are drawn or traced onto paper with marker or brush and ink. Layers of subtle color are then applied with
dye-infused tissue papers, using brush and water. If desired, pen and ink or
pastels can be applied to intensify colors and add depth. This technique is perfect for floral compositions or beautiful
abstracts.
Stamp Printing – Personalized
stamp
images are designed and cut out of foam sheets, then glued onto blocks
of
wood. The stamps are then inked onto paper to create unique patterns
and
designs. We will also work with novel stamping materials such as fruit
and found objects to create interesting patterns and textures.
Styrofoam Printing – This
is a variation of a beautiful form of fine
arts etching. Images are drawn or traced onto styrofoam sheets, and the
lines are then etched into the styrofoam. The surface is then coated
with printing ink and paper is pressed on
top, revealing a white line contour drawing in
reverse. Each piece is one of a kind, but can be printed several times
to create a limited edition series.
Ceramic Hand-Building Workshop – The students will learn
how to work with clay and to create clay containers. We will
discuss
and view historic examples. We will then guide them through the
hand-building methods of pinching, coil building,
slab building, slump forming, and press-molding. We will explore a
variety of surface treatments and finishes, including glazing. Each student will create five finished pieces, using each of the
hand-building methods. (6 weeks, 2 hours per
week - 12 hours total)
Ceramic Functional Ware Workshop – The students will learn how to create beautiful and functional objects from basic
hand-building clay techniques.We will
guide them through the construction, surface treatment, and glazing process.Projects include a vase, a large bowl, a platter,
a kitchen canister set, two trivet tiles, two spoon rests, two sponge holders, or two plant containers. Or they may suggest their own project. (4 weeks, 2 hours per week - 8 hours total)
Wind Chimes and Mobiles – Outdoor
wind chimes and indoor mobiles are created using a variety of man-made
and
natural materials. We will use wire, leather lacing, and
monofilament to attach various tone-producing objects, producing
hangings that are as beautiful to look at as they are to
hear. We can provide the materials or the students can use any collected
objects that they may have on hand.
Garden Flags – Beautiful
and colorful flags are created to hang in the student's rooms, or
to give to family members for their garden or porch. Designs of their
choosing are applied on muslin fabric, using
paint, markers, and ink stamps. Samples will
be provided for inspiration. The flags are be pre-cut, with
finished
edges, and a dowel rod is inserted to hang the flag.
Holiday Activity! Gift Cards and Wrapping – Unique sets of wrapping paper, gift bag, gift tags, and
greeting cards are created using a combination of stamping, painting, stenciling,
and other decorative techniques. These personalized, one of a kind
creations are very special presentations for birthdays, anniversaries, graduation,
holidays, or any other special occasion.
Holiday Activity! Holiday Ornaments – Round
and square glass bulbs are beautifully decorated both inside and out
for the holidays. We will use paints as well as diorama materials to customize the bulbs, and create unique decorations for the students and their families to cherish for many holiday seasons to
come.
